Today, we celebrate a true friend of the High School of Fashion Industries, Captain Alexander Brathwaite from the New York City Police Department, who serves as the commanding officer of the 10th Precinct. His journey is a remarkable testament to the values of hard work and determination instilled in him by his hardworking, working-class parents.
Raised in an environment where educational and career advancement were paramount, Captain Brathwaite credits his parents for laying a strong foundation for his aspirations. His father, a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, and his mother, a graduate of Baruch Graduate School who became a self-made entrepreneur, set exemplary standards for achievement. Following in their footsteps, his sister earned a Ph.D. from Hunter Graduate School and now serves as a senior research executive at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Inspired by these achievements, Captain Brathwaite pursued a career in the New York City Police Department with the same commitment to excellence.
Graduating from Hampton University in 2005, Brathwaite fulfilled his dream of becoming a police officer. Now enrolled at John Jay College for a master's degree in criminal justice, his dedication to professional growth has propelled him to the rank of Captain. In this role, he is honored to lead the 10th Precinct, focusing on mentoring newer officers and guiding the department toward its vision of effective community policing.
Captain Brathwaite's vision emphasizes building strong partnerships between law enforcement and the community. He is passionate about creating opportunities for our youth through engagement programs, mentorship, and positive interactions with police officers. He sees immense potential within the NYPD for young people to participate in internships and community outreach initiatives, fostering a sense of ownership in making our neighborhoods safer.
Together, with Captain Brathwaite's leadership, we can cultivate an environment where our youth feel empowered and supported. He looks forward to collaborating with the High School of fashion Industries to explore these opportunities and strengthen our ties.
Thank you, Captain Brathwaite, for your service and commitment to the children of New York City. We are proud to have you as a friend and ally.
