In 2016, Jean began his journey as a Peace Teacher, but his path in education began much earlier. From 2012-2014, Mr. Matelus worked as a substitute teacher, where he quickly earned a long-term assignment at a Brooklyn middle school. There, he assisted the Dean with behavior management and built strong relationships with students, ultimately reducing suspensions and detentions during those years.

Now, as a Mathematics teacher at the High School of Fashion Industries, Jean brings his love for math to his students. He deeply connected to the complex beauty and logic behind math, enjoying solving problems, discovering patterns, and seeing how math links to the real world. But it’s the confidence he builds in his students and helping them break through the stigmas around mathematics that truly brings him joy.

One of the most rewarding parts of Jean's work is watching his students grow—from struggling with basic concepts to mastering more advanced ones. It’s all about building trust, breaking down barriers, and helping students overcome math anxiety.

Organization is key for Jean! He carefully plans his lessons and sets routines that help reduce work-related anxiety. Managing time effectively ensures he can create an environment that’s calm, productive, and conducive to learning.

But it’s not just about academics. Jean uses strategies like classroom procedures and flexible seating arrangements to engage and motivate his students. He fosters an environment where every student feels safe, respected, and valued.

And the best moments? Last year, a student who once hated math came back to Jean to share that she had decided to major in mathematics education, inspired by Jean’s patience, kindness, and love for teaching. This is the impact that truly makes a difference.

Jean believes in balancing academic rigor with emotional support. He often includes Social Emotional language questions in his warm-ups to ensure a positive, inclusive classroom culture. And with the help of tools like the Promethean board, Desmos, Kahoot, and more, he makes lessons interactive and fun!

Jean’s work as an educator is more than just teaching; it’s about inspiring the next generation and making lasting, positive change. We’re lucky to have teachers like him!
