Ms. Severino's class visits NYU’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World to explore their exhibition, Discovering Life in al-Andalus: Madinat al-Zahra, The Radiant Capital of Islamic Spain.
During the visit, the students had a hands-on experience examining and assembling paper replicas of selected Umayyad jewelry from the Charilla Treasure hoard, arranging them as they imagined the owner might have worn them. They also engaged creatively by writing poetry inspired by an inscription on a pyxis—a container traditionally used to hold perfume for a loved one.
Overall, the trip was a tremendous success and a meaningful way to conclude our unit on the Islamic Empire.
