Symbolic printmaking
Sophomore Materials and Techniques artists explored symbolic printmaking in Ms. V.Chan’s class. Students designed and carved their own plates, printed multiple editions, and practiced HSFI Success Skills along the way: be creative, work hard, be dependable, and stay responsible in the studio. Proud of their craftsmanship and the stories they expressed through symbolism.

Youth Leader Spotlight- Sage Gonzalez
My name is Sage, and I’ve been a youth leader for the past three years. I chose to become a youth leader because I was inspired by the leaders who supported me when I was a freshman. Having that mentor–mentee relationship helped me navigate my first year of high school, and to this day, I’m still friends with my youth leaders. That experience made me want to give back. I wanted to administer the same lessons, provide the same guidance, and be that grounding figure for future freshmen. For the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of doing exactly that. My favorite part of the program is getting to have fun with my students and truly learn who they are. Through the activities we do together, we build a real bond and create a strong unit within the classroom. We look forward to meeting every week because it feels like our own little community.
One thing I love about HSFI is the abundance of resources and opportunities available to students. Thanks to the programming offered both inside and outside of HSFI, I’ve been able to jumpstart my career in photography so early on. I encourage every student to take full advantage of what’s offered, you never know what opportunities are waiting for you.
At HSFI, I’m part of a wide range of programs. Along with being an Equities and Emotions Youth Leader, I’ve been a co-lead for the Student-Staff Improvement Teams for three years. I also participate in work-based learning internships. I’ve run the Pokémon Club for four years, and this year, I co-founded the Black Student Union.
Because of HSFI, I’ve gained real field experience in photography, received opportunities I never imagined, and even became a national award-winning artist. I’m endlessly grateful. Thank you, HSFI!
