Vocational Programs

Vocational Training refers to the instructional programs or courses that focus on the skills required for a particular job function or trade.

If a Bachelor's or Associates Program is not the right fit, there are plenty of other Post-Secondary Options including Vocational Training programs.

  • Vocational AA program: through community college, 2 years, courses may or may not transfer.

  • Certificate Program: completed through a community college or other training institution, usually 1-2 years, has a diploma recognized by the industry, may require license following certification in order to practice.

  • Gap year program: designed for students who want to take a year before further education, work-based, training for specific jobs and other skills.

    • Year-Up is a one-year intensive training program for low-income young adults, age 18-24, that combines hands-on skill development, college credits, and corporate internships

    • City Year provides a stipend, higher education funding, student loan deferment, health insurance, and child care coverage for a year of full-time service in schools as tutors, mentors, and role models

    • AmeriCorps recruits, trains, and places members to meet critical community needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment for a full-time year of service across the US in return for a stipend, higher education funding, loan deferment, health insurance, and child care coverage.

  • Proprietary schools: for-profit institutions, not accredited, credentials may not be recognized by the industry, credits usually not transferable
